But who is Estée Lauder?
Visionary, role model, founder, Estée Lauder was ahead of her time in many ways. Gutsy, hard-working, she was a wife, mother, friend to many, all while founding and running one of the world’s most distinguished and innovative companies.
And she did it with such charm, humour and tasteful style. A lover of all things beautiful, she believed in the power of beauty.
How it all began
Born and raised in Queens, New York by Hungarian and Czech parents, her birth name was Josephine Esther Mentzer. Estée was a derivative of her nickname, Esty.
As a teenager, her Hungarian uncle came to live with her family and began making velvety creams, first in the kitchen, then in a garden laboratory in their stable. This sparked an interest in beauty. In addition to learning how to make the creams, Estée also learned how to apply them to women’s faces from her uncle.
In the late 1920s, Estée met Joseph Lauter (corrected to Lauder later on), and they were married in 1930 and moved to Manhattan.
Estée first started selling her skin care and makeup in beauty salons. She would demonstrate directly on the women while they sat under hair dryers. Then, in 1946 she and Joseph Lauder officially launched the company. A short year later, they got their first major order for products worth $800 from Saks Fifth Avenue.
Estée Lauder Fragrances
While Estée Lauder disrupted the world of skin care, she also had a great fragrance “nose.” In her early days, Youth-Dew’s blend of rose, jasmine, vetiver, and patchouli would gain her fame in the fragrance world.
Until the 1950s, perfumes were kept for special occasions, and women never bought for themselves – they waited for their husbands to buy for them on their birthdays, or their anniversaries. Looking for an inroad for women to buy for themselves, Estée created Youth-Dew, a bath oil that doubled as a skin perfume. By changing the way fragrance was sold, this innovation revolutionised the cosmetics industry and transformed the fledgling company into a multimillion-dollar enterprise.
She also oversaw the creation of five additional brands: Aramis (see our Aramis fragrances), Clinique (Happy by Clinique is one of our top sellers), Prescriptives, Lab Series and Origins.
Since then, the perfumes created by Estée Lauder have continued to embody what it is to be truly beautiful, feminine, and stylish.
