Issey Miyake
The great Japanese fashion designer, Issey Miyake – originally named Miyake Kazunaru – left his mark on all things fashion and fragrance-related.
His fusion of Eastern and Western elements brought a refreshing take to modern retail with his designs and perfumes.
Well-known for his trademark fragrance, L’Eau d’Issey, probably the one design he is best known for is his most simple: the black mock turtleneck worn by Apple cofounder Steve Jobs.
About Issey Miyake
Born April 22, 1938 in Hiroshima, Japan, Miyake studied graphic design at Tama Art University in Tokyo. In 1965 he moved to Paris and became a student at the prestigious tailoring and dressmaking school École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. Shortly thereafter, he started his career working for fashion greats like Guy Laroche, and Givenchy, to name a few.
Then, in 1970, he established a studio in Tokyo, and shortly thereafter showcased his own collection in a Paris group fashion show. Fast forward 10 years and Miyake is an internationally recognised name, with ready-to-wear fashion that gave him the nickname “King of Pleats” due to its similarity to origami.
